The Institute of Materials Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht invites applications for a Postdoc (m/f) in the area of Active protective coatings for galvanically coupled multi-material systems. The position is limited for 1-year with possibility to renew up to 3 years in total (starting as soon as possible).
The complex design of various engineering structures especially new light vehicle initiatives require combination of different materials in the same system. However the galvanic corrosion can become a limiting factor for different multi-material applications if the effective protection technologies are not developed in time. Therefore the need of development of the new strategies of active and passive corrosion protection for the multi-material applications is evident.
This project is focused on the development of the new active self-healing corrosion protective coatings for multi-material combinations which can be used into the hybrid light structures. The development of such new approaches is only possible via deep mechanistic investigation of the degradation processes taking place near the surface zone of multi-material systems. The essential step is finding the synergistic inhibiting combinations which can provide effective suppression of corrosion processes in the case of galvanically coupled dissimilar materials. The ultimate step is introduction of inhibiting compounds to the protective layers, adhesives and sealants used in the multi-material design of vehicles.
The applicant has to investigate new synergistic mixtures of corrosion inhibitors for different multimaterial assemblies and develop active protective coatings with nanocontainers of such inhibitors. He/she is able to work independently and to apply integral electrochemical and localized electrochemical techniques for understanding of corrosion and self-healing processes. Additional knowledge in the area of active protective coatings is of benefit.
The applicant has to have PhD degree in Materials Science or related areas. Proved experience in localized electrochemical techniques is obligatory as well as background in corrosion of light metals. Moreover the applicant should demonstrate ability to perform independent research work and write scientific papers being the first author and corresponding author. Minimum 5 SCI papers are expected. The proven ability to speak and write in English language is required. International mobility experience and experience in European projects is strongly desired.
