The mission of the BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing is to deploy technology in a safe and environmentally friendly way. Our research, testing, approval and regulation activities are intended to promote safety in engineering and chemistry. As a higher federal authority and departmental research institution of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi), with 1700 employees, we have national and international responsibi­lities, cooperate with universities and non-university research institutions and support young academics.

For the Division 8.5 „Micro Non-destructive Testing“ in Berlin-Steglitz , starting February 1st, 2014, we look for a

Project Leader in Materials Science and Characterisation

(Computer Tomography and X-Ray scattering)

Level 14 TVöD

24 months (Part time is possible)

Main duties:

Scientific co-ordination of Projects in the field of material science and NdT, using especially Micro- Computer Tomography and (optical) X-Ray techniques

Introduction and/or development of both dedicated sample environment, and of physical / micromechanical models for damage phenomena, trans­port and diffusion processes, mechanical properties

Own research in: materials characterisation, 3D Materials Science, Microstructure-Performance-Property relationships

Active acquisition and processing of industrial contracts and research projects

Identification of the socially and industrially relevant scientific problems in Materials Science and Characterisation

Supervision of graduate Students and technical Personnel

Co-operation with colleagues inside BAM, with research Institutions abroad and in Germany, with industrial partners and governmental Entities

Active presence in international committees for norms and guidelines


Profile requirements:

University Degree with Ph.D in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, or equivalent

Relevant experience in the fields mentioned above, proven by publications, scientific documentation, and funding

Excellent knowledge of materials characterisation methods, especially X-Ray scattering and Tomography. An advantage is experience in non-destructive testing for industrial applications

Solid background in Materials Science

Personnel and project leadership

English is a must, German is a plus

Wide academic and industrial network

Creativity, motivation and social skills

Team-oriented and communicative work style. Proven listening and com­munication skills
