Associate Scientist – Powder Metallurgy – Ames Laboratory, Iowa State University

The Division of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) of the Ames Laboratory is accepting applications for an Associate Scientist. This position will conceive, design, and conduct research for the synthesis and characterization of novel powder metallurgy (PM) alloys. The Associate Scientist will design, perform, and supervise experiments; interpret results; present and defend research results at professional meetings; write manuscripts for publication with collaborating co-authors; and write research proposals (as PI and co-PI) for future funding of projects.  

Required qualifications:  Master's degree and 5 years of related experience or Ph.D. with related graduate level research experience and 2 years of related experience. Degree must be in Material Science or a related field with experience in powder metallurgy, including gas atomization.  

Preferred qualifications:

Ph.D. in Material Science or related field.

Postdoctoral experience in powder metallurgy, including gas atomization of metal powders, consolidation techniques, and thermal mechanical processing; and familiarity with the characterization of metal powders, in the as-atomized and as-consolidated condition, and of thermally and/or mechanically processed powder-based alloys, using high energy X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy.

Experience in processing metallurgy including: gas atomization of metals and alloys, melting and transporting system design for ferritic and non-ferritic alloys (especially titanium and titanium alloys), process monitoring (temperature and pressure), thermal spray (plasma arc and high velocity oxygen fuel), and thermal mechanical (heat treating and deformation processing).

Publication record in powder metallurgy and process metallurgy.

Prior experience writing research grant proposals.
