Position Summary

The Research and Development Composite Design, Application & Characterization Leader is accountable for managing and developing a world-class materials composite application, design and characterization platform laboratory in Confidential Company’s R&D Center. The Leader will be responsible for delivering the Composite Application Portfolio of Projects and an advanced material characterization platform to drive composites business and manufacturing decisions, specifically as they relate to the North American Market. This role will provide strategic leadership and performance management for three laboratories globally (Granville, Paris, China) on key initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

The Research and Development Composite Design, Application & Characterization Leader will have responsibility for leading key programs that deliver new products and technologies for the North American Market. He/She will partner with the R&D leaders, marketing and business unit managers to accelerate new applications development initiatives, to execute priority programs with schedule, performance and budget requirements. He/She will also provide strategic leadership and day to day oversight of the Granville, Ohio based Characterization Laboratory.

Specific responsibilities include laboratory team leadership, applications project prioritization, schedule and budget milestones. Requirements include:

Composite Design and Applications

· Collaborate with customers to drive the acceptance of glass reinforced composite materials in their applications

· Develop the next generation of products and applications expanding the use of composites materials in existing and new products

· Prioritize a portfolio of projects assuring the alignment with the business unit goals and project management board

· Establish a world-class composite design platform to support application development projects as well as customers regarding their design requirements

· Collaborate with other R&D sites regarding composite design, composite application and characterization to leverage knowledge, skills, and abilities across Confidential Company

· Create best in class material composite application, design & characterization capabilities

· Network and communicate across organizational functional boundaries and built relationships within the business and marketing functions to support program objectives

Laboratory Management

· Drive world class composite application and characterization laboratory processes, systems and performances by assuring best in class testing methodologies and composite application testing

· Establish and manages annual lab budget proposing equipment and composite design software up-grades

· Establish operational priorities and align resources with Granville Research Center and business needs

· Provide ongoing customer and technical support to ensure the highest levels on internal and external service to support business goals

· Achieve lab accreditation through GL Lab Certification and manage the ongoing scientific and technical quality of the lab at a world-class level

· Demonstrate commitment to safety

Talent Management and Development

· Provide direct leadership for laboratory coordinators by setting annual goals, communicating expectations, conducting performance review discussions, encouraging personal development, and delivering constructive feedback

· Inspire teamwork across regional teams, staff functions and other business groups to maximize the performance of Confidential Company and the development of people

· Mentor and coach laboratory team while building and leveraging external expertise & capabilities

· Network with other lab leaders to drive Projects, best practices and leveraging talent, tools, and equipment

Professional Experience and Qualifications

The candidate should ideally have at least 10 years of experience leading R&D laboratories in composite area and working in a multinational business environment. Experience in the advanced composite materials industry is highly desirable. He/She will also bring at least 5 years of management experience leading teams and possess the following:

· Portfolio management, prioritizing initiatives and delivering complex, multi-technology programs to market

· Application of design tools, including program definition, design of experiments, robust design and process capability, and the ability to drive use of those tools through the program

· Experience, training and technical knowledge of composites application and materials analysis and testing processes to elevate the lab capabilities and talent to world-class level

· Technical knowledge of composites applications, materials analysis and testing processes

· Ability to expand penetration of products into new markets, applications and customers

· Ability to identify and suggest alternative technical solutions to meet customer requirements with greater efficiency or functionality, and to work collaboratively cross functionally and globally to deliver solutions

· Proven ability to lead teams and develop talent bench

· Strong communications skills with the ability to communicate effectively across levels and geographic regions

· Bilingual language fluency a plus
