Description:

Assistant Scientist I: This Ames Lab position performs experiments and analyzes results under the supervision of the Group Leader to support the Department of Energy and industrially sponsored research. The scope of the research involves searching for permanent magnet materials, rapid solidification, and materials characterization, as well as designing and developing experimental techniques.

Assistant Scientist II: This Ames Lab position performs experiments, prepares and characterizes samples and analyzes the results to support Department of Energy and industrially sponsored research in search of new permanent magnet materials. The successful applicant is expected to implement experimental plans provided by the Principle Investigators with minimal supervision. Sample preparation will involve aspects of rapid solidification, high temperature reactions, high temperature uniaxial pressing, and liquid solid diffusion couples. The ability to operate and trouble shoot a range of experimental equipment is required, as well as a high mechanical aptitude.  

Qualifications: 

Required: 

Assistant Scientist I;
Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Engineering or related field plus 1 year of related experience.


Assistant Scientist II:
Bachelor's degree in materials science and engineering (MSE) or related field plus 4 years of related experience or a Master's degree in MSE or related field plus 2 years of related experience.  

Preferred:  Experience with thermal analysis, metallographic sample preparation and analysis.
Experience in working with reactive, volatile or toxic materials including use of a glove box.
Basic understanding of phase diagrams.
Experience in the preparation and characterization of metal alloys, including the processes of melt processing, x-ray diffraction, metallography, and scanning electron microscopy.
Experience in setting up, operating and repairing mechanical and vacuum equipment.  

Salary:  Minimum $37,113, commensurate with qualifications.

Terms of appointment:  Term, 12-Month, full-time, appointment ending 05/31/2011 with the possibility of renewal for up to 3 years contingent upon satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
