POSITION TITLE: METALLURGIST

REPORTS TO: Engineering Director

POSITION SUMMARY: Perform duties required to develop and administer new and existing material: prepare customer quotations for company products; provide metallurgical support to department managers; develop new corrosion resistant alloys; perform related metallurgist activities; perform other duties as directed.

Knowledge Required: Broad knowledge of discipline such as metallurgy. Equivalent to a complete college or university education.

Experience Required: 6-7 years

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

  1. Prepare customer quotations for company products
    1. Review and evaluate customer engineering specifications
    2. Select equipment to provide the maximum operating efficiency and minimum price
    3. Determine product costs for existing and specialized products
    4. Prepare quotations for customer
    5. Provide additional information and follow-up support to customers
  2. Provide metallurgical support to Department Managers
    1. Review customer material specifications for the Sales Department and recommend materials for non-standard applications to ensure workability
    2. Evaluate new foundry sources and establish material specifications
    3. Provide metallurgical support to foundry sources
    4. Conduct review and analysis of defective components
    5. Review suppliers’ certifications and repair procedures to ensure quality assurance
    6. Review manufacturing and equipment problems and recommend correction procedures to Manufacturing Department
  3. Develop new corrosion resistant alloys
    1. Design chemical analysis to provide maximum corrosion resistance for a given environment, utilizing literature and manufacturing data and experience
    2. Conduct research to develop and improve metals and alloys
    3. Perform material testing to establish heat treatment procedures
    4. Perform laboratory testing such as corrosion, hardness, and metallographic inspection
    5. Interpret test results
    6. Prepare patent applications and assist patent attorney.
  4. Perform related Metallurgist activities
    1. Establish and conduct training programs to comply with OSHA regulations
    2. Prepare EPA – Toxic Release Inventory report to remain in compliance with government regulations
    3. Prepare various reports as required
  5. Use customer specifications, computer, quotes and price book
  6. Maintain ISO-14001 Environmental and OHSAS-18001 Health & Safety Systems
  7. Perform other duties as directed: the above list of primary duties is not exhaustive. It only defines some of the main responsibilities. An employee may be required to perform additional tasks not listed above.
